“Make sure you and your girlfriend wear appropriate attire.”

Noel had been mostly tuning out his mother’s voice while he worked on decorating the rec room tree and held his phone to his ear. But those words, coming through the tiny speaker, snapped him right back into the conversation.

“What was that?” He rounded the box he’d been working out of and walked to the tree, staring at it blankly.

“Tonight. The country club. You are still coming, aren’t you? Oh, don’t tell me you’re canceling. The Templetons are so looking forward to seeing you. They’ve been in Europe for the past couple of months, you know.”

Noel rubbed his forehead. Going upstairs to get the headache reliever seemed like a lot of work, but he sure could use some.

“I don’t know, Mom. I have a lot going on here.” He stepped back and looked around. “Garth’s coming home tomorrow, and this place isn’t ready yet.”

He felt guilty for pulling the Garth excuse, but the truth was, this place was not where he wanted it to be. And he needed to get it there before he could truly rest.

But that wasn’t the real reason he was resisting talking to his mom about dinner at the country club. It was the G-word she’d mentioned in her initial question. He didn’t want to explain that Ivy wasn’t his girlfriend, and as such, she wasn’t going to accompany him to a place even he didn’t want to go.

“Your father was really hoping to meet your new girlfriend,” his mom said. “He’ll be so disappointed.”

Disappointed. She’d said the one thing that could really get to him. He never, ever wanted to disappoint his dad. Unfortunately, he had too many times. Starting as a rebellious teen and progressing to when he hadn’t gotten into the university his father wanted him to attend. Then he’d dropped out of college altogether and started doing landscaping jobs . . . Finally, he’d managed to earn his father’s respect again when his business became hugely profitable and he rolled those profits into successful investment after successful investment, leading him to where he was today.

“I’ll be there,” Noel told his mom. “But I can’t promise Ivy will.”

“Ivy. Yes, that’s her name. I couldn’t remember.”

Noel opened his mouth to remind his mother that he’d never introduced Ivy as his girlfriend. He was pretty sure he’d only ever positioned her as the person helping him decorate. He’d never in any way given the impression there was something romantic between them.

This was his mother wanting to show everyone that her son was finally in a relationship. Finally, as in only one year after his wife had died. He should tell her just how out of line she was, but she was his mother. And besides, there were few things he wanted more right now than to spend the evening with Ivy Walsh.

That kiss. That kiss had pretty much taken over his every waking thought. He was having a hard time focusing on anything but how her lips had felt beneath his.
